MY TEACHING PRACTICES

Equity

Why I Do It

I received my BA at SDSU in Africana Studies. Learning about my culture helped me to love and appreciate myself, culture and my people. I then found that my newly emerged self knowledge and love grew abundantly into love of others. It was then I was able to see myself in others and truly appreciate people and their cultures. I love learning about people and I celebrate diversity.

What informs my practice

  • Culturally Responsive Teaching & The Brain by Zaretta Hammond

  • Multiplication is for White People by Lisa Delpit

  • Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen

  • A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki

  • Howard Zinn

What it looks like

Accessing Funds of knowledge, empathy interviews, culturally relevant content and curriculum, inviting family and community into classroom, Including neurodiversity in cultural studies. Viewing points in history  from different cultural perspectives.

Inclusion

Why I do It

I am a mother to a beautiful son with autism. Being apart of his journey has opened my eyes to how kindness, seeking to understand and not to judge along with inclusion can really improve the quality of life of those of us who have special needs. Because I believe in neurodiversity I want to ensure that my classroom values students of all abilities and supports students of all learning styles and needs.

What informs my practice

  • I Read it But Don't Get It by  Chris Tovani

  • Strategies for Classroom Practice: Instruction By Reiss

  • Reaching & Teaching Children Who Hurt by Susan E. Craig

  • Psychological Trauma & The Developing Brain by Phyllis T. Stein & Joshua Kendall

What it looks like

Using Universal Design for Learning  strategies in combination with ELL teaching strategies and creating a safe space for learning. This includes but not limited to using graphic organizers, visual timers & aides, use of technology, providing reading and writing scaffolds, and restorative justice practices and community circles.
